Ripensia Timișoara is a historic football club based in Timișoara, Romania. Founded in 1928, the club has a rich history and has made significant contributions to Romanian football. The club's name, "Ripensia", is derived from the Latin name of Timișoara, "Temeswar", which means "reborn".
Ripensia Timișoara was initially established by employees of the Banat Railways and quickly became a force to be reckoned with in Romanian football. The club was the first professional football team in Romania and was also the first to have a coach from abroad. It was during the 1930s and 1940s that the club enjoyed its golden era, winning the Romanian Championship four times and the Romanian Cup twice.
The club was known for its attacking style of play and was a pioneer in introducing floodlit evening matches in Romania. It was also the first Romanian club to reach the quarter-finals of the Mitropa Cup, a prestigious European competition at the time.
However, the club was disbanded in 1948 following the establishment of the communist regime in Romania, which sought to suppress professional football. Despite this, the legacy of Ripensia Timișoara lived on, and the club was fondly remembered by football enthusiasts in Romania.
In 2012, after more than six decades of inactivity, Ripensia Timișoara was reestablished. The reformed club started from the bottom of the Romanian football league system and has since been working its way up. Despite the challenges, the club has managed to achieve some success, including promotion to the Liga II, the second tier of Romanian football.
Ripensia Timișoara's home matches are played at the Stadionul Dan Păltinișanu, a multi-purpose stadium in Timișoara. The club's traditional colours are red and yellow, and its emblem features a locomotive, a nod to the club's origins.
Throughout its history, Ripensia Timișoara has been known for its commitment to developing local talent. Many players who started their careers at the club have gone on to represent the Romanian national team and play in some of the top football leagues in Europe.
Today, Ripensia Timișoara continues to uphold its rich tradition and remains a beloved institution in Romanian football. The club's remarkable journey, from its early dominance to its disbandment and eventual rebirth, is a testament to its resilience and enduring passion for the beautiful game.
