Alianza Petrolera is a professional football club based in Barrancabermeja, Colombia. Founded on October 24, 1991, the club is relatively young compared to other Colombian football clubs. Despite its youth, Alianza Petrolera has managed to establish itself as a competitive force in Colombian football.
The club was initially established as a partnership between the Colombian Petroleum Company (Ecopetrol) and the Colombian Football Federation. The name "Alianza Petrolera" translates to "Oil Alliance," reflecting the club's roots in the petroleum industry. The club's colors, yellow and green, are also a nod to the petroleum industry, representing oil and nature respectively.
Alianza Petrolera spent the first two decades of its existence in the Colombian second division, Categoría Primera B. However, the club's fortunes changed in 2012 when they won the Torneo Apertura, earning promotion to the top tier of Colombian football, Categoría Primera A.
Since their promotion, Alianza Petrolera has proven to be a resilient competitor in the top division. The club has consistently finished in the top half of the league table and has qualified for the playoffs on multiple occasions. Despite not yet winning a championship in the top division, Alianza Petrolera's performances have earned them respect and recognition in Colombian football.
The club plays its home games at the Daniel Villa Zapata Stadium, a venue with a capacity of over 10,000 spectators. The stadium is known for its passionate and vocal supporters, who create an intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams.
Alianza Petrolera is also known for its commitment to youth development. The club has a successful youth academy that has produced several players who have gone on to represent the Colombian national team. This focus on youth development is part of the club's long-term strategy to establish itself as a powerhouse in Colombian football.
In terms of rivalries, Alianza Petrolera has a fierce rivalry with Cúcuta Deportivo, a club based in the nearby city of Cúcuta. Matches between the two clubs are known as the "Petroleum Derby" and are among the most anticipated fixtures in the Colombian football calendar.
In summary, Alianza Petrolera is a club with a rich history and a bright future. Despite its relatively short existence, the club has managed to establish itself as a competitive force in Colombian football. With a passionate fan base, a successful youth academy, and a resilient team, Alianza Petrolera is a club that is poised for success in the years to come.
