Club América de Cali, commonly known as América de Cali or simply América, is a renowned professional football club based in Cali, Colombia. Founded on December 13, 1927, by a group of young enthusiasts, the club has grown to become one of the most successful and popular teams in Colombian football history.
América de Cali has a rich history marked by numerous achievements and challenges. The club has won the Colombian professional football championship, Categoría Primera A, 15 times, making it one of the most successful teams in the league. The team has also made its mark internationally, reaching the Copa Libertadores finals four times, although they fell short of the title each time.
The club's home games are played at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero, a stadium with a capacity of over 33,000 spectators, located in the San Fernando neighborhood of Cali. The team's colors are red and white, and their mascot, a devil, is a nod to their nickname, "Los Diablos Rojos" (The Red Devils).
América de Cali's history is not without its dark periods. The club was owned by the Rodríguez Orejuela brothers in the 1980s and 1990s, who were infamous drug traffickers. This led to the club being placed on the "Clinton List" by the United States government in 1999, a designation for organizations linked to drug trafficking. This resulted in financial difficulties for the club, as they were unable to receive international funding or sell players abroad. The club was finally removed from the list in 2013, marking the end of a challenging era.
Despite these difficulties, América de Cali has consistently produced high-quality players, many of whom have gone on to represent the Colombian national team and play in some of the world's top football leagues. The club has a renowned youth academy, known for nurturing and developing young talent.
The club's passionate fan base, known as "Los Barra Brava," is one of the most dedicated in Colombia, providing unwavering support through the team's highs and lows. Their rivalry with Independiente Medellín, known as the "Clásico Rojo," is one of the most intense in Colombian football.
Over the years, América de Cali has shown resilience and determination, bouncing back from adversity to continue its legacy of success. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and commitment to nurturing talent make it a cornerstone of Colombian football.
