Founded in 1925, Sociedad Deportiva Amorebieta is a Spanish football club based in Amorebieta-Etxano, in the autonomous community of Basque Country. Known for its distinctive green and blue striped uniforms, the club is often referred to as 'Zornotzarras', a term derived from the Basque name for the town, Zornotza.
Amorebieta's home ground is the Urritxe Municipal Stadium, a venue with a capacity of 3,000 spectators. The club has spent the majority of its history in the lower tiers of Spanish football, with a strong community focus and a commitment to nurturing local talent. Over the years, it has developed a reputation for its youth academy, which has produced several players who have gone on to play in higher divisions.
The club's journey to the upper echelons of Spanish football has been a gradual one. After decades in the regional leagues, Amorebieta achieved promotion to the Tercera División (Fourth Division) in 1983. They remained in this division for nearly three decades, before finally earning promotion to the Segunda División B (Third Division) in 2010.
Amorebieta's time in the Segunda División B was marked by steady progress. The club consistently finished in the top half of the table and reached the promotion playoffs on several occasions. However, it was not until the 2020-2021 season that they achieved their most significant milestone to date. Under the guidance of manager Iñigo Vélez, Amorebieta finished in the top four of their group and won the subsequent playoff matches, earning promotion to the Segunda División (Second Division) for the first time in their history.
Despite its modest size and resources, Amorebieta has always punched above its weight. The club's success is a testament to its strong community ties, commitment to youth development, and never-say-die attitude. As they prepare to embark on their journey in the Segunda División, the Zornotzarras will be hoping to continue their upward trajectory and write a new chapter in their illustrious history.
