About Oviedo

Real Oviedo is a professional football club based in Oviedo, Asturias, in northern Spain. Founded on March 26, 1926, the club currently competes in the Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish football league system.

The club's origins can be traced back to the merger of two football clubs in Oviedo, Stadium Ovetense and Real Club Deportivo Oviedo. The club quickly gained prominence in Spanish football, reaching the top-tier La Liga for the first time in the 1933-34 season.

Real Oviedo's golden era came in the 1930s and 1940s when they finished as high as third in La Liga in the 1934-35 season. The club also reached the Copa del Rey final in 1933 but lost to Athletic Bilbao.

In the post-war years, Real Oviedo experienced a period of instability, fluctuating between La Liga and the Segunda División. However, the 1980s and 1990s saw a resurgence, with the club maintaining a consistent presence in La Liga and producing notable players such as Robert Prosinečki and Abel Xavier.

The turn of the millennium brought financial difficulties for Real Oviedo. In 2003, they were relegated to the third tier due to financial irregularities. The club's financial situation worsened, and they were further demoted to the fourth tier in 2006.

In 2012, the club launched a successful share issue, attracting investors from around the world and saving the club from bankruptcy. The campaign was backed by the global football community, with fans from over 60 countries buying shares. This global support has led to Real Oviedo being dubbed "the world's team."

Since then, Real Oviedo has been on a steady path to recovery. They returned to the Segunda División in 2015, where they have remained since. The club's home ground is the Estadio Carlos Tartiere, named after the club's first president. It has a capacity of 30,500, making it one of the largest stadiums in the Segunda División.

Real Oviedo's traditional colors are blue and white, symbolizing the sky and the snowy mountains of Asturias. The club's crest features the Cross of the Angels, a symbol of the city of Oviedo.

Throughout its history, Real Oviedo has been known for its passionate fan base. Despite the club's ups and downs, the fans, known as 'Carbayones,' have remained loyal, supporting the team through thick and thin.

In conclusion, Real Oviedo is a club with a rich history and a passionate fan base. Despite facing financial difficulties and relegation, the club has shown resilience, bouncing back to compete in the higher tiers of Spanish football. With its global community of supporters, Real Oviedo continues to be a symbol of the enduring spirit of football.
