Club Deportivo Leganés, commonly known as Leganés, is a professional football club based in Leganés, a city located in the outskirts of Madrid, Spain. Founded on 26 June 1928, Leganés has a rich history of more than 90 years in Spanish football. The club's home ground is the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, which has a seating capacity of over 12,000 spectators.
In its early years, Leganés played in the lower tiers of Spanish football. The club's fortunes began to change in the 1980s when they earned promotion to the Segunda División B, the third tier of Spanish football. This marked the beginning of a period of growth and success for the club.
In the 1992-1993 season, Leganés achieved promotion to the Segunda División, the second tier of Spanish football, for the first time in their history. They spent most of the next two decades in this division, establishing themselves as a competitive team.
The 2015-2016 season was a historic one for Leganés as they secured promotion to La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football, for the first time. This was a significant milestone in the club's history, marking their arrival on the biggest stage of Spanish football.
Despite being one of the smaller clubs in La Liga, Leganés proved to be a tough competitor, often punching above their weight against more established teams. They managed to maintain their La Liga status for four seasons, before being relegated back to the Segunda División at the end of the 2019-2020 season.
Throughout its history, Leganés has been known for its strong work ethic and team spirit. The club has a reputation for developing young talents and has produced several players who have gone on to have successful careers in Spanish and international football.
The club's colours are blue and white, inspired by the city's coat of arms. Their mascot, a cucumber (Pepinero), has become a symbol of the club and its close ties with the local community. The nickname 'Los Pepineros' (The Cucumber Growers) is a nod to the city's agricultural past.
Despite the ups and downs, Leganés remains a beloved institution in its city and a respected competitor in Spanish football. The club's journey, from its humble beginnings to competing in La Liga, is a testament to its resilience and determination. As they look to the future, Leganés continues to embody the spirit of perseverance and passion that has defined their history.
