About Athletic Club

Athletic Club, also known as Athletic Bilbao, is a professional football club based in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. Established in 1898, it is one of the oldest football clubs in the country and has a rich history that spans over a century. The club is renowned for its unique policy of recruiting only Basque players, a tradition that has been upheld since its inception.

The club was founded by a group of young Basque students living in Bilbao. They adopted the English style of the game, which was popular at the time, and named the club "Athletic Club". The club's first official match was played in 1902, and they won the inaugural Copa del Rey, Spain's premier football competition, the same year.

Athletic Club's home ground is the San Mamés Stadium, also known as "La Catedral" (The Cathedral), which has a seating capacity of over 53,000. The stadium is famous for its electrifying atmosphere and passionate fans, known as 'Los Leones' (The Lions).

Athletic Club has a rich trophy cabinet, having won the La Liga title eight times and the Copa del Rey 23 times, making them one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history. Despite their success, the club has also faced periods of struggle, particularly in the late 20th century. However, they have always managed to maintain their status in the top tier of Spanish football, being one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The club's player recruitment policy, known as the 'Cantera policy', is a cornerstone of their identity. This policy restricts the club to sign only players native to or trained in football in the greater Basque Country. This unique approach has resulted in a strong sense of local pride and identity, with the majority of their players coming through the club's youth academy, Lezama.

Athletic Club has produced many notable players who have gone on to achieve great success both domestically and internationally. These include Telmo Zarra, the club's all-time top scorer; Andoni Zubizarreta, one of Spain's greatest goalkeepers; and Fernando Llorente, a key figure in Spain's 2010 World Cup-winning squad.

Despite the limitations of their recruitment policy, Athletic Club remains competitive in Spanish football. They reached the final of the Copa del Rey in 2020 and 2021, and have consistently finished in the top half of La Liga in recent seasons. The club's commitment to its traditions, coupled with its success on the pitch, has earned it respect and admiration from football fans worldwide.

In conclusion, Athletic Club is more than just a football club; it is a symbol of Basque identity and pride. Its unique philosophy, passionate fan base, and rich history make it one of the most distinctive and respected clubs in the world of football.
