Cardiff City Football Club, also known as the "Bluebirds," is a professional football club based in Cardiff, Wales. Founded in 1899 as Riverside A.F.C, the club changed its name to Cardiff City in 1908 and entered the Southern Football League in 1910, before joining the English Football League in 1920.
Cardiff City holds the distinction of being the only non-English side to have won the FA Cup, a feat achieved in 1927. They also reached the final in 1925 and 2008. The club's most successful period came in the 1920s, where they consistently finished in the top half of the English First Division.
The club's fortunes fluctuated over the subsequent decades, with periods in the lower divisions. However, Cardiff City returned to the top tier of English football, the Premier League, for the 2013-2014 season, after a 51-year absence. The club was relegated after one season but made a return to the Premier League in 2018, only to be relegated again after the 2018-2019 season.
Cardiff City plays its home games at the Cardiff City Stadium, a venue they moved to in 2009 after 99 years at Ninian Park. The club's traditional colours are blue and white, and their crest features a bluebird, from which their nickname is derived. However, between 2012 and 2015, the club's home kit was changed to red and black, a controversial move that was reversed due to fan pressure.
The club has a fierce rivalry with Swansea City, with matches between the two known as the South Wales Derby. This rivalry extends beyond football, reflecting the historical and cultural differences between Cardiff and Swansea.
Cardiff City has also made significant contributions to the Welsh national team, with numerous players representing Wales at international level. The club has a strong youth development program, producing several players who have gone on to have successful professional careers.
Despite the ups and downs, Cardiff City remains one of the most recognisable and respected football clubs in Wales. Their rich history, passionate fan base, and commitment to developing local talent have ensured their place in the annals of British football.
