Leeds United Football Club, often simply referred to as Leeds United or Leeds, is a professional football club based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The club was established in 1919, following the disbandment of Leeds City F.C. by the Football League. Leeds United has a rich history and is known for its passionate fan base, iconic white kit, and the distinctive peacock emblem.
The club's early years were marked by moderate success, with Leeds United winning the Second Division title in 1923-24. However, it wasn't until the 1960s and 1970s under the management of Don Revie that Leeds United truly emerged as a powerhouse in English football. During this golden era, Leeds won two First Division titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups.
Leeds United's success continued into the 1990s, with the club winning the last First Division title in 1991-92 before the inception of the Premier League. However, financial mismanagement led to a decline in the club's fortunes in the early 2000s, culminating in relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history in 2007.
Despite these challenges, Leeds United has shown remarkable resilience. The club returned to the Championship (second tier) in 2010 and after a decade-long struggle, they finally secured promotion back to the Premier League in 2020 under the guidance of renowned Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa. This marked the end of a 16-year absence from the top flight of English football.
Leeds United's home ground is the 37,890-capacity Elland Road, where they have played since their formation. The stadium is known for its electric atmosphere, particularly in the famous Kop stand. The club's traditional rivals are Manchester United and local neighbours Bradford City and Huddersfield Town, with whom they contest the West Yorkshire derby.
Leeds United has also contributed significantly to the English national team over the years, with players like Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, and Alan Smith having represented the Three Lions while playing for the club.
In summary, Leeds United is a club with a storied past, marked by periods of great success and challenging times. However, with their return to the Premier League, the future looks bright for this historic English football club.
