Swansea City Association Football Club, commonly known as Swansea City, is a professional football club based in Swansea, Wales. The club was founded in 1912 as Swansea Town and joined the Football League in 1921. The team changed its name to Swansea City in 1969 to reflect Swansea's new status as a city.
Swansea City is known for its distinctive white and black uniforms, earning them the nickname "The Swans". Their home ground is the Liberty Stadium, which they moved into in 2005 after leaving their previous home, Vetch Field, where they had been based for over 90 years.
The club has had its fair share of ups and downs throughout its history. The Swans experienced their first major success in the early 1980s under the management of John Toshack, reaching the First Division (now the Premier League) and finishing in 6th place, their highest ever league position. However, by the end of the decade, they had slipped back into the lower divisions.
Swansea City faced near bankruptcy and relegation from the Football League in the early 2000s. However, a consortium of local businessmen took over the club and initiated a remarkable turnaround. The Swans climbed back up the divisions and in 2011, they returned to the top flight of English football by winning the Championship play-offs.
In the 2012-2013 season, under the management of Michael Laudrup, Swansea won their first major English trophy, the League Cup (commonly known as the Capital One Cup), by defeating Bradford City 5-0 in the final. This victory also earned them a place in the 2013-2014 UEFA Europa League, their first appearance in a major European competition.
Despite this success, the club has faced challenges, including relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2017-2018 season. However, the Swans continue to compete strongly in the Championship, the second tier of English football, and remain one of Wales' most successful and well-supported clubs.
Swansea City has a strong community ethos and is known for its youth development programmes. Many players from the club's academy have gone on to play for the first team and represent their countries at international level.
The club's history, resilience, and community spirit make it a beloved institution in Swansea and beyond. Despite the challenges, the Swans continue to strive for success, embodying the passion and determination of the city they represent.
