FC Ingolstadt 04 is a professional football club based in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 2004, the club is relatively young in comparison to other German football clubs. The formation of FC Ingolstadt 04 was a result of the merger of two local clubs, ESV Ingolstadt and MTV Ingolstadt, with the aim of creating a team that could compete at a higher level of German football.
The club's colors, black and red, were adopted from ESV Ingolstadt, while the logo was derived from MTV Ingolstadt. The club's nickname, "Die Schanzer," has historical roots dating back to the 16th century, referring to the city's fortress builders during the Thirty Years' War.
FC Ingolstadt 04 started its journey in the Regionalliga Süd (III), the third tier of German football. The club quickly climbed the ranks, achieving promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2008. The team's success didn't stop there, as they continued to impress with their performances, eventually earning promotion to the Bundesliga, Germany's top-tier league, in 2015. This was a historic moment for the club, marking their debut in the highest level of German football.
The club's time in the Bundesliga was short-lived, however. After two seasons, they were relegated back to the 2. Bundesliga in 2017. Despite this setback, FC Ingolstadt 04 remains a competitive force in German football, consistently battling for promotion back to the top tier.
The team plays its home games at the Audi Sportpark, a modern stadium with a capacity of over 15,000 spectators. The stadium is named after the automobile manufacturer Audi, which is based in Ingolstadt and is a major sponsor of the club.
Over the years, FC Ingolstadt 04 has developed a reputation for nurturing young talent. The club's youth academy has produced several players who have gone on to play in the Bundesliga and other top European leagues.
Despite its relatively short history, FC Ingolstadt 04 has managed to establish itself as a respected club in German football. The team's rapid rise through the ranks of German football, coupled with its commitment to youth development, has earned it a dedicated fan base and a reputation as a club with a bright future.
