FK Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, is a professional football club based in Belgrade, Serbia. Founded on March 4, 1945, the club has a rich history and is one of the most successful clubs in Serbian and former Yugoslavian football.
The name Crvena Zvezda translates to 'Red Star', symbolizing the spirit of the new socialist era in Yugoslavia after World War II. The club's emblem, a red star within a white circle, has become an iconic symbol in Serbian football.
Red Star Belgrade's home ground is the Rajko Mitić Stadium, also known as Marakana, named after the famous stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With a seating capacity of over 53,000, it is one of the largest stadiums in Southeast Europe.
The club has a storied history in both domestic and international competitions. In the former Yugoslav First League, Red Star Belgrade won a record 19 championships and 12 national cups. Since the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the club has continued its dominance in the Serbian SuperLiga, winning the championship multiple times.
On the international stage, Red Star Belgrade's crowning achievement came in 1991 when they won the European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League. They are the only Serbian and ex-Yugoslav club to have won the prestigious tournament, defeating Olympique Marseille in the final.
Red Star Belgrade is also known for its passionate fan base. The club's supporters, known as the 'Delije', are renowned for their fervent support and spectacular choreographed displays during matches. They have been a significant part of the club's identity and have often been credited for creating an intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams.
The club has also been a breeding ground for many notable players who have gone on to have successful careers both domestically and internationally. Some of the famous players who started their careers at Red Star Belgrade include Nemanja Vidić, Dejan Stanković, and Darko Pančev.
Despite facing financial difficulties and political turmoil in the past, Red Star Belgrade has remained a dominant force in Serbian football. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and success on the pitch make it one of the most respected and feared teams in the region.
In recent years, Red Star Belgrade has continued to assert its dominance in Serbian football, consistently finishing at the top of the Serbian SuperLiga. The club's commitment to nurturing young talent and its continued success on the pitch ensures that Red Star Belgrade remains a significant player in European football.
