Heart of Midlothian Football Club, commonly known as Hearts, is a professional football club based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Established in 1874, Hearts is one of the oldest and most respected football clubs in Scotland. The team plays its home games at Tynecastle Park, a stadium with a capacity of over 20,000 spectators, located in the Gorgie area of the city.
Hearts is named after a dance hall, which in turn was named after the novel "The Heart of Midlothian" by Sir Walter Scott. The club's crest is based on the Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the city's Royal Mile, symbolising their deep-rooted connection to Edinburgh.
Throughout its history, Hearts has enjoyed considerable success both domestically and in Europe. The club has won the Scottish league championship four times, with their most recent victory coming in the 1959-60 season. They have also won the Scottish Cup eight times and the Scottish League Cup four times. In Europe, Hearts has competed in both the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals of the former in the 1988-89 season.
The club has a fierce rivalry with Hibernian FC, another Edinburgh-based team, with their matches known as the Edinburgh derby. These matches are some of the most hotly contested in Scottish football and are eagerly anticipated by both sets of fans.
Hearts is renowned for its youth development system, which has produced many players who have gone on to have successful careers both in Scotland and abroad. The club is also known for its strong community ties, with the Hearts Community Coaching and Football Academy playing a key role in promoting football in the local area.
In recent years, Hearts has faced financial difficulties, entering administration in 2013. However, the club has since stabilised under the ownership of Ann Budge, who took over in 2014. The club's supporters, through the Foundation of Hearts, are set to become the majority shareholders, demonstrating the strong bond between the club and its fans.
Despite the challenges, Hearts remains a significant force in Scottish football, consistently competing in the top tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and commitment to community engagement ensure that Hearts continues to be a beloved institution in Scottish football.
