Hibernian Football Club, colloquially known as Hibs, is a professional football club based in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. The club was founded in 1875 by Irish immigrants, making it one of the oldest teams in Scotland. The name Hibernian is derived from Hibernia, the Roman name for Ireland, reflecting the club's Irish roots.
Hibs play their home games at Easter Road Stadium, which has been their base since 1893. The stadium currently has a seating capacity of over 20,000, making it the fifth-largest football stadium in Scotland. The club's traditional playing colours are green and white, and their crest features a harp, a football, and a ship, symbolising their Irish heritage, their sport, and the maritime history of Leith, respectively.
Hibernian has a rich history in Scottish football, having won the Scottish league championship four times, most recently in 1952. They have also won the Scottish Cup three times, with their latest victory coming in 2016, ending a 114-year wait since their last win in 1902. In addition, Hibs have won the Scottish League Cup three times.
The club has a long-standing rivalry with Hearts, another Edinburgh-based club, and their matches, known as the Edinburgh derby, are some of the most fiercely contested in Scottish football. Hibs also share a rivalry with Rangers and Celtic, the two most successful clubs in Scotland, largely due to historical, social, and religious reasons.
Hibernian has a reputation for nurturing young talent, with their youth academy, Hibernian Youth Development, producing several players who have gone on to have successful careers at both club and international level. Notable graduates include Scottish internationals Scott Brown, Derek Riordan, and Steven Whittaker.
Off the pitch, Hibernian is a community-focused club, with the Hibernian Community Foundation carrying out a range of initiatives aimed at improving health, education, and opportunities for people in the local area. The club also has a strong fanbase, with the Hibernian Supporters Association being one of the largest football supporters' groups in Scotland.
In recent years, Hibernian has been a regular fixture in the top tier of Scottish football, the Scottish Premiership, and has competed in European competitions on several occasions. Despite experiencing some ups and downs, the club remains a significant force in Scottish football, with a proud history and a bright future.
