The Seattle Sounders Football Club is a professional soccer club based in Seattle, Washington, USA. Established in 2007, the Sounders are one of the most successful teams in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top tier of American soccer.
The club's name, "Sounders," is a tribute to Seattle's maritime history and the Puget Sound that borders the city. The team's colors, rave green and pacific blue, reflect the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The Sounders' crest features a modern abstract design, incorporating the iconic Space Needle and a tribute to the city's culture and history.
The Sounders made an immediate impact in their inaugural MLS season in 2009, winning the U.S. Open Cup, a feat they repeated in 2010, 2011, and 2014. They also clinched the Supporters' Shield in 2014, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. The pinnacle of the club's success came in 2016 when they won their first MLS Cup, a triumph they repeated in 2019.
The Sounders play their home games at Lumen Field, a stadium they share with the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). Known for its passionate and vocal fans, the Sounders consistently rank among the top in MLS for average attendance, often exceeding 40,000 fans per game.
The club has been home to several notable players, including U.S. international Clint Dempsey, Uruguayan international Nicolás Lodeiro, and Panamanian international Román Torres. These players, among others, have helped establish the Sounders as a force in American soccer.
Off the field, the Sounders are committed to giving back to the community. The RAVE Foundation, the official charitable arm of the club, uses soccer as a vehicle to empower and inspire youth, particularly those from underserved communities. The club also promotes environmental sustainability, becoming the first carbon-neutral soccer club in North America in 2019.
Under the leadership of majority owner Adrian Hanauer and head coach Brian Schmetzer, the Sounders continue to strive for excellence on and off the pitch. With a dedicated fan base, a winning tradition, and a commitment to community service, the Seattle Sounders FC remains a pillar of American soccer.
