Football Club Liège, often referred to as RFC Liège, is a historic football club based in Liège, Belgium. Founded in 1892, it is recognized as one of the oldest football clubs in Belgium and has a rich history that spans over a century. The club is known for its passionate fan base and its commitment to nurturing local talent.
RFC Liège had its golden era in the early and mid-20th century. The club won its first Belgian championship in the 1895-96 season, and went on to secure the title five times by 1953. The club also won the Belgian Cup twice, in 1987 and 1990. The victory in 1990 is particularly memorable as it secured them a place in the European Cup Winners' Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals.
Despite these successes, the club faced financial difficulties in the late 20th century, which led to its relegation to the lower leagues. However, RFC Liège has shown resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The club has been steadily climbing back up the ranks, with the aim of returning to the top tier of Belgian football.
The club's home ground is the Stade du Pairay, located in Seraing, a suburb of Liège. The stadium, with a capacity of over 4,000, is known for its intimate atmosphere and the passionate support of the home fans.
RFC Liège has a reputation for developing young talent, with a strong focus on its youth academy. The club has produced several players who have gone on to have successful careers in Belgium and abroad. Some notable players who started their careers at RFC Liège include Belgium international Axel Witsel and former Standard Liège captain Sérgio Conceição.
The club's traditional colors are red and blue, and its emblem features a lion, a symbol of the city of Liège. The club's motto, "Fier et Fidèle" (Proud and Faithful), reflects its commitment to its city, its fans, and the sport of football.
In recent years, RFC Liège has been making steady progress in its journey back to the top. The club won the Belgian Fourth Division in the 2013-14 season and the Belgian Third Division in the 2017-18 season. As of now, the club competes in the Belgian Second Amateur Division.
Despite the ups and downs, RFC Liège remains a beloved institution in Belgian football. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and commitment to local talent make it a unique and important part of the Belgian football landscape.
