Lommel United, officially known as Lommel SK since 2017, is a professional football club based in Lommel, Belgium. The club was founded in 2000 following the merger of two local teams, KFC Lommel SK and Overpelt Fabriek. The club's history, however, dates back to 1932 when the original KFC Lommel SK was established.
Lommel United has a rich history of ups and downs, marked by financial struggles, rebranding, and a series of promotions and relegations. Despite these challenges, the club has managed to maintain a strong presence in Belgian football, often playing in the Belgian Second Division, the second-highest level of football in Belgium.
The club's colors are green and white, reflecting the city's emblem and the club's commitment to its local community. The team plays its home matches at the Soevereinstadion, a stadium with a capacity of 8,000 spectators, located in the heart of Lommel.
Throughout its history, Lommel United has been known for its strong youth academy, producing several players who have gone on to play at higher levels, both in Belgium and abroad. The club has a reputation for its commitment to developing young talent and promoting them to the first team.
In 2019, Lommel SK was acquired by the City Football Group, a holding company that owns several football clubs around the world, including Manchester City FC. This acquisition marked a new chapter in the club's history, providing financial stability and the potential for further growth and development.
Despite the changes and challenges, Lommel United remains a beloved institution in its hometown. The club's passionate fans, known as the 'Green-Whites', are known for their unwavering support and loyalty. The club's motto, "Samen Sterk" (Strong Together), encapsulates the spirit of unity and resilience that has defined Lommel United throughout its history.
As of 2021, Lommel SK competes in the Belgian First Division B. Despite the club's modest size and resources compared to some of its rivals, it continues to punch above its weight, demonstrating the enduring strength and spirit of this proud Belgian football club.
