Club Atlas is a renowned Mexican football club based in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Founded on August 15, 1916, by a group of young enthusiasts, the club has a rich history spanning over a century. It is one of the oldest football clubs in Mexico and has played a significant role in shaping the country's football landscape.
Atlas is known for its red-and-black uniforms, earning them the nickname "Los Zorros," which translates to "The Foxes." They play their home games at the Estadio Jalisco, a stadium they share with Club Universidad de Guadalajara. The stadium, which can hold up to 56,713 spectators, is one of the largest in Mexico and has been Atlas's home ground since 1960.
The club competes in the Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican football. Despite its long history, Atlas has won the league title only once, in the 1950-51 season. However, they have consistently been a strong competitor, often finishing in the top half of the league table and reaching the playoffs on numerous occasions.
Atlas is also known for its youth academy, known as "La Academia," which has produced a number of talented players who have gone on to have successful careers both in Mexico and abroad. Notable alumni include Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado, and Jared Borgetti, all of whom have represented Mexico at the FIFA World Cup.
The club's history is not without its struggles. Atlas has faced financial difficulties and ownership changes over the years. Despite these challenges, the club has always bounced back, demonstrating the resilience and determination that are characteristic of its players and fans.
Atlas's fan base, known as the "Fiel," is one of the most passionate in Mexican football. They are known for their unwavering support, often filling the Estadio Jalisco to capacity for home games. The club's rivalry with crosstown club Chivas de Guadalajara, known as the "Clásico Tapatío," is one of the most heated in Mexican football and draws large crowds every season.
In recent years, Atlas has been making strides to return to its former glory. The club has invested in its youth academy and infrastructure, and has brought in experienced players and coaches to bolster its squad. With a rich history, a passionate fan base, and a promising future, Club Atlas remains a significant player in Mexican football.
