Tigres UANL, officially known as Club de Fútbol Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, is a professional football club based in San Nicolás, Nuevo León, Mexico. Founded on March 7, 1960, the club is one of the most successful and popular teams in Mexican football, boasting a rich history and a strong fan base.
The club is owned by the public University of Nuevo León and their home games are played at Estadio Universitario, a stadium with a capacity of over 41,000 spectators. The team's nickname, "Tigres," translates to "Tigers" in English, and their mascot, a tiger, is a symbol of their fierce competitiveness on the pitch.
Tigres UANL has a long-standing rivalry with Monterrey, another team from the Nuevo León region. Matches between the two teams, known as the "Clásico Regiomontano," are some of the most heated and anticipated in Mexican football.
Tigres UANL has enjoyed considerable success throughout its history. The club has won the Liga MX, Mexico's top-flight football league, seven times. Their first championship came in the 1977-78 season, and their most recent in the 2019 Clausura. They have also won the Copa MX three times and the Campeón de Campeones three times.
Internationally, Tigres UANL has also made its mark. The club has reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions League four times, winning the title in 2020. This victory marked the first time a Mexican team has won the tournament since its rebranding in 2008. In 2020, Tigres UANL also became the first Mexican club to reach the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, finishing as runners-up to Bayern Munich.
Over the years, Tigres UANL has been home to many notable players, including Tomás Boy, Gaitán, Gerónimo Barbadillo, and André-Pierre Gignac. The latter, a French striker, has become one of the club's most iconic figures, scoring over 100 goals since his arrival in 2015.
Tigres UANL's youth academy has also produced several players who have gone on to have successful careers, both in Mexico and abroad. This includes players like Jesús Dueñas, Alan Pulido, and Jürgen Damm.
Off the pitch, Tigres UANL is known for its passionate and loyal fan base. The "Libres y Lokos," the club's main supporter group, is renowned for creating an electric atmosphere at home games, complete with chants, banners, and fireworks.
In summary, Tigres UANL is a club with a rich history and a strong identity. From its successes on the pitch to its passionate fan base, the club is a proud representative of Mexican football and continues to strive for success in both domestic and international competitions.
