Club Necaxa is a professional football club based in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Founded on August 21, 1923, in Mexico City, the club has a rich history and tradition in Mexican football. Known for their distinctive red and white striped kit, Necaxa is also referred to as "Los Rayos" or "The Lightning Bolts".
Necaxa's early years were marked by success, winning the Mexican Championship in 1933, 1935, and 1937. The club was a founding member of the professional Liga Mayor in 1943, which later became the Primera División, now known as Liga MX. Necaxa continued to be a dominant force in Mexican football, winning numerous championships and earning a reputation for producing talented players.
In the 1990s, Necaxa experienced a resurgence, winning the league championship in the 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 seasons. The club also achieved international success during this period, winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1999 and reaching the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2000.
However, the early 2000s were a challenging period for Necaxa. The club was relocated from Mexico City to Aguascalientes in 2003, and faced relegation to the Ascenso MX, the second tier of Mexican football, in 2009. Despite these setbacks, Necaxa returned to the top flight in 2016 and has since reestablished itself as a competitive team in Liga MX.
Necaxa's home ground is the Estadio Victoria, a modern stadium with a capacity of over 23,000 spectators. The club has a passionate fan base, known as the "Rayos faithful", who are renowned for their unwavering support.
Over the years, Necaxa has contributed numerous players to the Mexican national team, including legendary figures such as Horacio Casarín, Octavio Vial, and Alberto García Aspe. The club has also been home to international players from across the Americas and Europe.
Despite its ups and downs, Necaxa remains one of Mexico's most historic and respected football clubs. Its commitment to developing young talent, combined with its rich history and passionate fan base, ensures that Necaxa continues to play a significant role in Mexican football.
