Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, commonly known as Club Tijuana or Xolos, is a professional football club based in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Founded in January 2007, the club has made a significant impact on Mexican football in a relatively short period.
The name Xoloitzcuintles refers to a breed of hairless dogs, the Xoloitzcuintli, which is indigenous to Mexico and considered a cultural and historical symbol. The dog is also the club's mascot, symbolizing the club's deep connection to Mexican culture and heritage.
Club Tijuana played its first season in the Mexican Football League's second division, Liga de Ascenso. Showing remarkable progress, the club won the Apertura 2010 tournament, earning the right to compete for a spot in the top-tier Liga MX. In 2011, after a victory over Irapuato, Club Tijuana was promoted to the Liga MX, marking a significant milestone in the club's history.
In 2012, just a year after their promotion, Club Tijuana achieved another remarkable feat by winning the Apertura tournament of the Liga MX, their first top-flight title. This victory not only cemented the club's status in Mexican football but also qualified them for the prestigious CONCACAF Champions League.
The club plays its home games at the Estadio Caliente, a stadium with a seating capacity of 27,000. Known for its passionate and dedicated fan base, the club's home games often draw large crowds, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.
Club Tijuana has also shown commitment to developing young talent, with a strong focus on its youth academy. Several players from the academy have progressed to the first team and have represented Mexico at various youth levels.
Despite its relatively short history, Club Tijuana has made a name for itself in Mexican football. With its commitment to youth development, strong fan base, and a history of success, the club looks set to continue its upward trajectory in the coming years.
