Racing Club de Lens, commonly referred to as RC Lens or simply Lens, is a professional football club based in Lens, Pas-de-Calais, France. Founded in 1906, the club has a rich history spanning over a century, marked by notable achievements and a passionate fan base.
Lens plays its home games at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a stadium with a capacity of over 38,000, known for its electrifying atmosphere. The club's colors are red and gold, earning them the nickname "Les Sang et Or" (The Blood and Gold). The club's mascot, an elephant, is a symbol of strength and determination.
Lens has spent the majority of its history in the top tier of French football, Ligue 1. The club's most successful period came in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when they won their only Ligue 1 title in the 1997-98 season and finished as runners-up in the 2001-02 season. They also won the Coupe de la Ligue in 1994 and 1999, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 2000.
Despite these successes, Lens has also faced challenges. The club was relegated to Ligue 2 in 2008 and spent several seasons in the second tier. However, they made a triumphant return to Ligue 1 in 2020, demonstrating their resilience and determination.
Lens has a strong youth development program, known for producing talented players who have gone on to have successful careers both in France and abroad. Notable alumni include Raphael Varane, who has won the Champions League with Real Madrid, and Geoffrey Kondogbia, who has represented France and Central African Republic at the international level.
The fans of Lens, known as the "Lensois", are renowned for their passionate support. Despite the city of Lens being one of the smallest to host a Ligue 1 team, the club regularly attracts large crowds to their home games. The fans' loyalty and fervor have been a defining feature of the club, contributing to its unique identity in French football.
Throughout its history, RC Lens has embodied the values of hard work, resilience, and community. The club's motto, "Our Strength Lies in Our Passion", perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Lens – a club that, regardless of its ups and downs, continues to inspire passion and loyalty among its fans.
