Stade de Reims, commonly referred to as Reims, is a prestigious football club based in Reims, France. Founded in 1910, the club has a rich history and is renowned for its significant contributions to French football. Reims is particularly known for its golden era in the 1950s and 1960s when it was a dominant force in both domestic and European football.
The club was initially established as Société Sportive du Parc Pommery and later changed its name to Stade de Reims in 1931. Reims gained prominence in the post-World War II period, winning its first Ligue 1 title in the 1948-49 season. This marked the beginning of a golden era for the club, which went on to win five more Ligue 1 titles in 1953, 1955, 1958, 1960, and 1962.
Reims also made its mark in European football, reaching the finals of the European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League, twice in 1956 and 1959. Although they lost on both occasions, their performances against the likes of Real Madrid showcased their quality and competitiveness on the international stage.
The club's success was largely attributed to its talented players, such as Raymond Kopa and Just Fontaine, who are considered among the greatest French footballers of all time. Kopa, in particular, was instrumental in Reims' success, winning the Ballon d'Or in 1958.
However, the club's fortunes declined in the late 1960s, leading to a series of relegations and promotions. Financial difficulties in the 1990s saw Reims fall to the third tier of French football. Despite these challenges, the club managed to regain its footing and returned to Ligue 1 in 2012.
Today, Reims continues to compete in the top tier of French football, showcasing its resilience and determination. The club's home matches are played at the Stade Auguste-Delaune, a stadium with a capacity of over 21,000 spectators. The club's traditional colors are red and white, and its emblem features a champagne glass, a nod to the region's famous champagne production.
Reims' history is a testament to the highs and lows of football, marked by periods of great success and challenging times. Despite the ups and downs, the club has remained a significant part of French football history and continues to inspire future generations of footballers.
