Stade Rennais Football Club, commonly referred to as Rennes, is a professional football club based in Rennes, France. Founded in 1901, it is one of the oldest football clubs in the country and has a rich history of contributing to the development of French football. Rennes is known for its distinctive red and black striped jerseys, earning them the nickname "Les Rouges et Noirs" (The Reds and Blacks).
Rennes has spent the majority of its history in Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, and has consistently been a strong contender in the league. The club's home ground is Roazhon Park, a stadium with a seating capacity of over 29,000, known for its passionate and loyal fan base.
Rennes has a reputation for having one of the best youth academies in France, producing several players who have gone on to have successful careers at both club and international level. Some notable graduates include Yoann Gourcuff, Ousmane Dembélé, and Yann M'Vila.
Despite its long history, Rennes has often been considered an underachiever in French football, with a lack of major trophies to its name. However, the club has had its moments of glory. In 1965 and 1971, Rennes reached the final of the Coupe de France, although they were runners-up on both occasions. The club finally tasted success in the competition in 2019, when they beat Paris Saint-Germain in the final to win their first major trophy in almost half a century.
In terms of league performance, Rennes' best finish in Ligue 1 came in the 2004-2005 season, when they finished fourth. More recently, the club achieved a third-place finish in the 2019-2020 season, securing a place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.
Over the years, Rennes has been home to several notable players, including Sylvain Wiltord, Petr Čech, and Jimmy Briand. The club has also been managed by some well-known figures in football, such as Vahid Halilhodžić, Guy Lacombe, and Julien Stéphan.
Rennes' main rivals are Nantes, with matches between the two teams known as the "Derby Breton". These matches are some of the most fiercely contested in French football, reflecting the historical rivalry between the two regions of Brittany and Pays de la Loire.
Today, Rennes continues to be a competitive force in French football, consistently finishing in the top half of Ligue 1 and regularly competing in European competitions. The club's commitment to youth development, combined with its passionate fan base and rich history, ensures that Rennes remains a significant player in the landscape of French football.
