Proleter Novi Sad's first major success came in 1989 when they won the Novi Sad Football Subassociation League, earning promotion to the Serbian League Vojvodina, one of the four sections of the Serbian third tier. The club continued to progress and reached the second tier, the Serbian First League, in the early 1990s.
The club's golden era came in the late 1990s and early 2000s when they competed in the top tier of Serbian football. Proleter Novi Sad's best finish in the SuperLiga came in the 1998-99 season when they finished in 5th place. The club also had a successful run in the Yugoslav Cup, reaching the quarterfinals in the 1997-98 season.
However, the club faced financial difficulties in the mid-2000s, leading to relegation and a period of instability. Despite these challenges, Proleter Novi Sad managed to bounce back and return to the Serbian First League in 2012. The club achieved promotion to the SuperLiga in 2018, marking their return to the top tier after a gap of over a decade.
Proleter Novi Sad is known for its youth academy, which has produced several players who have gone on to have successful careers in Serbia and abroad. The club's philosophy is centered around developing young talent and promoting them to the first team.

The club's aim is to continue developing young talent and to establish itself as a regular competitor in the top tier of Serbian football. Despite the ups and downs, Proleter Novi Sad remains a beloved institution in Novi Sad, reflecting the city's passion for football.
