Blackpool Football Club, fondly known as the "Tangerines" due to their distinctive orange and white strip, is a professional football club based in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. Founded in 1887, the club competes in the English Football League (EFL) system.
Blackpool FC's journey has been a rollercoaster ride, with the club experiencing various highs and lows throughout its history. The club's golden era came in the 1950s when they were a force to be reckoned with in the top tier of English football, then known as the First Division. The highlight of this period was undoubtedly their FA Cup triumph in 1953, a match famously known as the "Matthews Final" in honour of their legendary player Sir Stanley Matthews. This remains the club's only major trophy to date.
The club's home ground is Bloomfield Road, a stadium they have occupied since 1901. The venue, which can accommodate over 17,000 spectators, is known for its vibrant atmosphere, particularly during local derbies.
Blackpool FC has produced several notable players over the years. Besides Sir Stanley Matthews, players like Jimmy Armfield, Alan Ball, and Paul Stewart have all donned the tangerine jersey. The club has also been home to a number of high-profile managers, including the likes of Sam Allardyce and Ian Holloway.
However, the club has also faced its share of challenges. Following their relegation from the Premier League in 2011, Blackpool experienced a dramatic fall from grace, dropping to the fourth tier of English football by 2017. This period was marked by financial instability and ownership disputes, which led to a strained relationship between the club's supporters and its owners.
In 2019, a new chapter began for Blackpool FC when Simon Sadler, a lifelong fan of the club, purchased a 96.2% stake, promising to bring stability and ambition back to the Tangerines. The club has since shown signs of resurgence, achieving promotion to the Championship, the second tier of English football, in 2021.
Despite the ups and downs, Blackpool FC remains a beloved institution in English football. The club's rich history, passionate fan base, and iconic orange strip make it a unique and cherished part of the country's footballing landscape.
