Burton Albion Football Club, fondly known as the Brewers, is a professional football club based in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England. The club was established in 1950, and it currently competes in the English Football League (EFL) Two, the fourth tier of English football.
The Brewers' journey to professional football was not a straightforward one. They initially played in non-league football for 58 years, with their first major success coming in 2002 when they won the Northern Premier League Premier Division. The club's fortunes took a turn for the better when they were promoted to the Football Conference, the top tier of non-league football, in 2002.
Burton Albion's rise to the English Football League was marked by a series of promotions. In the 2008-2009 season, they secured their place in the Football League for the first time in their history, finishing as champions of the Football Conference. The club continued to climb the football pyramid, reaching the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, in 2016. This was a significant achievement for the Brewers, marking their highest ever position in the football league system.
The club's home ground is the Pirelli Stadium, named after Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli, who have their UK headquarters in Burton. The stadium, opened in 2005, has a capacity of approximately 6,912, with 2,034 seats.
Over the years, Burton Albion has produced several notable players, including England international goalkeeper, Jack Butland, and striker, Darren Stride, who holds the record for the most appearances for the club. The Brewers have also been managed by several high-profile managers, including Nigel Clough, son of legendary manager Brian Clough, who led the club to the Championship.
Despite their fluctuating fortunes, Burton Albion remains a club deeply rooted in its community. The club's community trust engages in various activities, including football coaching, health and education projects, and initiatives to tackle social exclusion and poverty.
In recent years, the club has faced challenges, including relegation from the Championship in 2018. However, the Brewers have shown resilience and determination, mirroring the spirit of their hardworking, industrial hometown. Their story is one of perseverance, ambition, and a deep love for football, embodying the essence of the beautiful game.
