Exeter City Football Club, colloquially known as the Grecians, is a professional football club based in Exeter, Devon, England. The club was founded in 1901 and has a rich history that spans over a century.
Exeter City plays its home games at St James Park, a stadium with a capacity of over 8,500. The club's traditional colors are red and white, and their crest features a lion and an eagle, symbols that represent strength and vigilance respectively.
The Grecians have spent the majority of their history in the lower divisions of the English Football League. However, they have had their moments of glory, including a few seasons in the third tier and several memorable cup runs. One of the most notable moments in the club's history came in 1914 when they embarked on a tour of South America, becoming the first team to play a Brazilian national side.
Exeter City has a reputation for nurturing young talent, with numerous academy graduates going on to have successful careers at higher levels. The club's youth development system is considered one of the best outside the top two tiers of English football.
The club has a strong community ethos and is owned by the Exeter City Supporters' Trust. This makes it one of a few supporter-owned football clubs in England. The Trust took over the club in 2003, rescuing it from financial difficulties, and has since worked to ensure its sustainability and success.
Exeter City's main rivals are Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United, with whom they contest the Devon Derby. These matches are highly anticipated events, generating a passionate atmosphere both on and off the pitch.
Despite the ups and downs, Exeter City remains a beloved institution in Devon. The club's dedicated fan base, combined with its commitment to community and youth development, ensures that it continues to play a vital role in the local area and the wider world of football.
