Accrington Stanley Football Club, often known as Accrington ST, is a professional football club based in Accrington, Lancashire, England. The club was established in 1968, following the dissolution of the original Accrington Stanley in 1966. The club's name is derived from the original team which was one of the twelve founding members of the English Football League in 1888. However, the original club went out of business in 1966, and two years later, the current club was formed to keep the name of Accrington Stanley alive in the football world.
Accrington ST competes in the English Football League (EFL) system and has spent most of its history in the lower tiers of English football. The club's home ground is the Wham Stadium, previously known as the Crown Ground, which has a capacity of around 5,450. The team's traditional colours are red and white, and their nickname is "the Stanley".
The club's journey has been a rollercoaster ride, from facing financial struggles to achieving remarkable success. Accrington ST has been known for its resilience, bouncing back from the brink of extinction to become a competitive side in the English Football League. The club's most significant achievement came in the 2017-2018 season when they secured promotion to League One, the third tier of English football, for the first time in their history.
Despite being one of the smaller clubs in the EFL, Accrington ST has a dedicated fan base. The club is deeply rooted in its local community and has a reputation for developing young talents through its academy system. Over the years, the club has produced several players who have gone on to play at higher levels.
The club's motto, "The Club That Wouldn't Die", perfectly encapsulates its spirit and determination. Despite facing numerous challenges, Accrington ST has continued to fight and thrive, embodying the true spirit of football. The club's history is a testament to its resilience and dedication to the sport, making it a beloved institution in English football.
Accrington ST's journey is a reminder that football is not just about the glitz and glamour of the Premier League, but also about the passion, community spirit, and love for the game that exists at all levels of the sport. The club's story is one of perseverance, resilience, and an unyielding love for football, making it a true symbol of the sport's enduring appeal.
