Barrow Association Football Club, commonly known as Barrow AFC or simply Barrow, is a professional football club based in the town of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Founded in 1901, the club has a rich history spanning over a century, during which it has experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows.
The club's early years were spent in regional leagues before they were elected to the Football League in 1921. Barrow AFC spent the majority of their time in the lower tiers of the English football league system, with their highest finish being 8th in the third tier during the 1966-67 season. The club's tenure in the Football League came to an end in 1972 when they were voted out to make way for Hereford United.
Following their exit from the Football League, Barrow AFC spent several decades in the non-league system. They became a mainstay in the Conference National, now known as the National League, which is the highest level of non-league football in England. During this period, the club experienced financial difficulties and even faced the threat of extinction on several occasions. However, they managed to survive and continued to compete at a high level.
Barrow AFC's most significant achievement in recent years came in the 2019-20 season when they won the National League title under the guidance of manager Ian Evatt. This victory secured their return to the Football League after a 48-year absence, marking a new chapter in the club's history.
The club plays its home games at Holker Street, also known as the Progression Solicitors Stadium for sponsorship reasons. The ground has a capacity of just over 5,000 and has been the club's home since 1909. The team's traditional colours are blue and white, and their nickname is the "Bluebirds".
Despite their struggles and periods of adversity, Barrow AFC has always been a club that is deeply rooted in its local community. The club's loyal fan base has been a key factor in their survival and eventual return to the Football League. Barrow AFC's story is a testament to the spirit of perseverance and resilience in football.
