Mansfield Town Football Club, affectionately known as "The Stags," is a professional football club based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. The club was established in 1897 as Mansfield Wesleyans, named after the Wesleyan church with which it was associated. In 1910, the club changed its name to Mansfield Town, and it has been known by this moniker ever since.
The Stags play their home matches at Field Mill, also known as the One Call Stadium due to sponsorship. The stadium, which is one of the oldest football grounds in England, has a capacity of approximately 10,000 spectators.
Mansfield Town's traditional colours are blue and yellow. The club's crest features a stag, in reference to the club's nickname, and the Nottinghamshire county coat of arms, reflecting the club's geographical location.
Throughout its history, Mansfield Town has experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows. The club has spent most of its existence in the lower tiers of the English Football League (EFL). The Stags achieved their highest league position, 21st in the Second Division (now the Championship), during the 1977-78 season. The club has also had success in cup competitions, most notably winning the Football League Trophy in 1987.
However, Mansfield Town also faced significant challenges. Financial difficulties led to the club's relegation from the EFL to the Conference Premier (now the National League) in 2008. This marked a difficult period in the club's history, as it spent five seasons in non-league football before securing promotion back to the EFL in 2013.
Despite these challenges, Mansfield Town has always been a club with a strong community focus. The club's community scheme, established in 1989, has won numerous awards for its work in the local area. The scheme offers a range of activities, including football coaching, dance classes, and educational programmes, aimed at improving the lives of people in the Mansfield area.
Over the years, Mansfield Town has produced several notable players who have gone on to play at higher levels. These include England international goalkeeper Chris Woods, who began his career at the club, and striker Liam Lawrence, who later played in the Premier League.
As of 2021, Mansfield Town competes in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. The club continues to strive for success on the pitch, while maintaining its strong links with the local community off it. Despite the ups and downs, the spirit and passion of the Stags remain undiminished, reflecting the club's motto: "Passionate about Mansfield Town."
