Wrexham Association Football Club, commonly known as Wrexham AFC or simply Wrexham, is a professional football club based in Wrexham, Wales. Founded in 1864, it is one of the oldest surviving football clubs in the United Kingdom. The club competes in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, as of the 2021-2022 season.
The club's history is rich and varied, with periods of success interspersed with challenges. Wrexham AFC has spent most of its existence outside the top tiers of English football but has had its moments of glory. The club's most successful period came in the late 1970s and early 1980s when they won the Welsh Cup and reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Wrexham's home ground is the Racecourse Ground, the world's oldest international football stadium that still hosts international matches. It has been the club's home since its inception, and it has a current capacity of over 10,000 spectators.
The club's traditional colours are red and white, and its nickname is "The Red Dragons," a nod to the dragon on the Welsh flag. The club's crest also features a dragon, further cementing this connection to Welsh national symbolism.
Wrexham AFC has had a number of notable players over the years, including Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, and Gary Bennett. These players have left an indelible mark on the club's history, contributing to its successes and helping to shape its identity.
The club has also faced financial difficulties and ownership disputes. In 2011, the Wrexham Supporters Trust took over the club, saving it from potential dissolution. This marked a new era for the club, with fans having a direct say in its operation and future direction.
In 2020, Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club, promising to turn Wrexham into a "global force." Their ownership has brought increased attention to the club, with fans around the world taking an interest in its fortunes.
Despite its ups and downs, Wrexham AFC remains a beloved institution in Welsh football. Its long history, passionate fan base, and iconic home ground make it a unique and enduring part of the football landscape. The club's future looks bright, with new ownership and a renewed sense of optimism surrounding its prospects. As it moves forward, Wrexham AFC continues to embody the spirit and passion of football in Wales.
